Part-Time Writer (New York, NY)
Job Description
The communications department is seeking a part-time writer (20 hours per week) who will be responsible for drafting op-eds, blog posts and letters to the editor on behalf of Ruth Messinger and other AJWS leaders. These pieces must effectively and persuasively communicate the organization’s mission and advocacy positions while leveraging various “news hooks” such as world events, public policy debates, Jewish holidays, AJWS programs and events, and secular days of recognition/commemoration.
Responsibilities
* Regularly draft thought pieces in collaboration with AJWS staff
* Move drafts through multi-layered approval process, including rewrites and incorporation of edits
* Coordinate with in-house media relations professionals on placement and cross-posting
* Identify opportunities for persuasive opinion pieces for blogs and newspapers
* Participate in conference calls and meetings with the communications, advocacy and education & community engagement (ECE) departments to strategize and leverage AJWS’s work in the media.
Qualifications
* Minimum of five years of experience as a professional journalist
* BA and/or Masters degree (Communications or English major preferred)
* Excellent writing, editing, proofreading and verbal and written communication skills
* Successful track record in writing straight-forward, persuasive opinion pieces for media outlets
* Must have working knowledge of world affairs and human rights issues
* Commitment to global and social justice issues
* Ability to recognize opportunities and draft nuanced pieces on complex topics
* Ability to meet deadlines, often within very tight timeframes
* Exceptional attention-to-detail and organizational skills
* Knowledge of Jewish and social justice issues a plus
Assignment Duration
* 20 hours/per week through 2011; Possibility for extension of assignment in 2012
